My dog had several bouts of diarrhea last night and it had a few small drops of blood in it. I also noticed when my other dog went this morning that his had a small drop of blood in it. Could this be a virus? What should i do?

If both dogs are affected then it would suggest either the same contamination source (spoilt food) or a potentially contagious gastroenteritis. I presume they are vaccinated?

The priority for diarrhea is ensuring they remain hydrated. A good test of this is holding up the scruff around their neck and then letting go. It the scruff drops down immediately then hydration is good. If it drops slowly then it indicates a degree of dehydration.

It may be worth having them checked by your vet. if they have a high temperature it may be worth putting them on antibiotics. They should especially see their vet if they are lethargic and not themselves.

    hope that helps, David

Every day I see pets come into my clinic injured and unwell. Its always so upsetting knowing that treatment could be taken a lot further only if the owner had taken out pet insurance. You have health insurance, so should your pet... Dr Brooks
