Skin Rash with Black Bumps/Scabs

Rating: 10

My 1.5 year old golden retriever, Max, has a rash on his underside belly that extends down to his hind legs. There are red/pink areas that look like he's been itching. On his hind quarters there are some areas of black bumps that have the feeling of scabs.
I put him on Sargeant's SENRYPRO XFC (which had scary reviews of pet seizures...and I promptly washed it off of him with dishwashing soap) and put the regular K-9 Advantix I usually bought on him about 5 days later.
He has never had a skin problem and has always been in good health. I don't know what to do and need some guidance. I've attached a picture (hopefully it helps) and have more that I could send. Please help me!

Hi, I would probably go to your vet and get some skin scrapes and hair plucks to look for mites or fungal elements. This doesnt look related to fleas. He should probably also have some anti itch meds and antibiotics until the cause has been found so that it doesnt get worse.

My preference for flea control is Frontline (Uk and USA) or Advocate (UK only???)

    I hope that helps, David

Every day I see pets come into my clinic injured and unwell. Its always so upsetting knowing that treatment could be taken a lot further only if the owner had taken out pet insurance. You have health insurance, so should your pet... Dr Brooks

It sounds and looks like Pyoderma.  Which basicly means pustules under or on the skin.  There are many causes, such as an inhalant allergy, food allergy, or fleas/ticks.  I would recommend seeing your Veterinarian and getting a prescription shampoo/conditioner.  You might also need to be on an antihistimine and or a cortisone to help control the itching.  We also recommend putting your pet on a fish oil supplement or getting a food/diet with fish oils in it.  Advantix is ok I also prefer other products for fleas but I think Advantage, Promeris, Vectra, Frontline Plus are all very good products.  Good luck ,Andrea

The discoloration is usually do to the licking/chewing the dog does to the skin.  If the sterioids are not helping then there are other things that you and your Vet might consider.  Good luck.  Andrea
