my 1 1/2 year old black tabby has injured his front right paw. the pad of one of his "toes" is ripped not bleeding but very sore when touched and he is limping and lathargic. I have cleaned it an covered it with a sock with tape and he is leaving it alone. Is there anything else I can do or look for before getting him to the vet on Monday?

I would ensure the wound is cleaned daily until you see your vet. antibiotics and painkillers are indicated but you would need to see a weekend vet for that. Please make sure the bandage is not too tight. it might be worth getting some sterile pads to cover the actual wound with rather than a sock. The sock is not sterile and may stick to the wound. Hope that helps, sorry for the delay in answering Im at work right now. David

Every day I see pets come into my clinic injured and unwell. Its always so upsetting knowing that treatment could be taken a lot further only if the owner had taken out pet insurance. You have health insurance, so should your pet... Dr Brooks
