Why does my dog bark at aeroplanes and how can I stop it? We live under a flight path and it annoys the neighbors.

Hiya sorry to hear about your problem, this is not a unusual problem. The best way to combat this is by strict training. Start small and then work your way up. Milo is barking as they are very noisy and probably feels threatened. 1. Try and fing aeroplane noises on a cd or tape and play this in your house every time a noise comes on and a reaction by your dog is made distract him / her with something (their fave toy for example) once Milo is not focussed on the areoplane and is not barking then give Milo a treat (small cube of chicken, sasauge etc..) 2. Repeat this exercise on a daily basis gradually turning the volume up on the cd / tape. 3. Only when you start seeing a reaction can you move this exercise outside with a real areoplane, again treating with chicken. 4. The purpose is to teach Milo that the areoplane noise is a good thing and everytime Milo hears this noise he will gradually learn that chicken is his reward. Only if Milo is quiet and distracted, then Milo recieves the chicken. 5. It is recommended that a dog will learn a trick after 10 times but this will certainly be a slow progress. In the mean time please explain to your neigbours that you are trying to combat the problem. I am sure they will understand. Under no curcumstances must you shout at Milo and tell him to be quiet, and please try to stay calm when a areoplane goes past as if you are showing signs of stress (or even your neighbours) then Milo will see this areoplane noise as a very bad thing as it is already upsetting his owners so why should he be calm. Please let me know how you go. I also work with a behaviourist and i will check if there is anything else you can do. Good luck xx Stacey
