dog bad behavior change

I recent went to FL. and left my dog with a friend who ended up neglecting my dog. for example she left her in a cage all weekend no food water and she ended using the bathroom all over the cage. Since I have gotten her back her behavior has changed dramatically. She was potty trained very well. Now she goes anywhere and gets scared very easily and pees on herself. She mainly hides under the bed and goes there. and vomits sometimes under there to. we have a cat she would playful have fun with. Now when they play she makes evil growling sounds like it is a real fight. we have to leave her in the cage at night otherwise she pees on the floor. I want my good sweet dog back. what can i do?

    Hi

I'm really sorry to hear that your sweet dog has been subjected to this awful neglect. I assume this person is no longer your friend.

It sounds like your dog has received a very negative experience and it will take some time for her to learn to trust again. I would certainly take her to your vet for a check over and then keep things very calm and normal for her. Don't try too hard to make her love you again. In other words don't try and get her to come to you or try and fuss her all the time. Just allow her to come to you in her own time. If she does come to you don't make a huge fuss, just a gentle hello a nice treat and go about your normal business.

Don't tell her off for acting how she does or if she urinates inappropriately just clean it up with a smile.

You might find she is calmer when you take her for nice walks. If so take this opportunity to play fun games.

So take your time, don’t over fuss her or coax her out. relax, act calmly and keep everything as normal as possible. Be strong for her and hopefully in time she will learn to trust again.

    Good luck

Good Dog? Bad Dog? By Rosie Barclay. This book concentrates on changing the traditional views of how we perceive and treat our dogs using what we have learned from scientific research so far. It starts at the beginning by looking at ways of how to chose and bring up a new puppy that may reduce the likelihood of future problems. It then goes on to cover different problems that commonly occur between owners and their maturing or adult dogs by discussing real case studies. TO BUY VISIT www.rosiebarclay.com
