Allergies and/or hair loss

Every year about this time (early fall) my cat and dog both get really itchy and start to lose their fur. I mentioned it to my vet last year and she said it's not fleas but some sort of allergic reaction. I was unsuccessful in the medication she subscribed, they stopped itching several weeks later and hair grew back a few months later. Any suggestions on an over the counter medication?

    Hi

If this is an allergy then you can try giving both dog and cat piriton. One children's piriton (an antihistamine) 2x daily may help a bit. Also keep up to date with anti-flea spot ons just in case.

Severe allergies will often only respond to either allergen avoidance (often impossible anyway) or long term corticosteroids, which are not available over the counter.
