My dog's itching is crazy... for the past year+

Hello, for over a year my dog has had a terrible itching problem. She's a little white dog, part bichon & part poodle and apparently they are the worst for these cases. I've taken her to the vets so many times over the past year+, they've run countless tests, given her a variety of medications and we've changed her food to a hypo-allergy food (Orange bag from the vets, she's been on that since at least May).

A few weeks ago I took her back in because I thought she might have flees. She constantly was chewing herself all over from the back, legs and butt. I used revolution on her all summer and now their changing it to a new one. They didn't find any fleas but the spots resembled that she was biten. I thought it would've been from when we borded her or groomed her for the week we went to Niagara Falls for our wedding but that was over a month ago and there's no fleas on her. They also gave me a steroid to give her to help control her allergies for a week or two which seemed to help early on but did nothing as we eased her off.

Its at the point now where shes constantly biting when she's not sleeping. I have to keep a cone on her head for I'd say 60-80% of everyday and she's just not the same dog anymore. She seems depressed and obviously in a lot of discomfort.

It's bad and I don't know what other options we can do. Should I take her to a different vet for a 2nd opinion? I spent thousands on her last year and to be honest my patience have run dry as I know she's very uncomfortable throughout the day.

I'd rather her go back on her old food, eat rawhide bones again and enjoy life because for now this hypo-allergy stuff has done nothing for her at all and she's been on it for 4-5 months with zero treats or bones.

Any help is sooooooo much appreciated.

    Jason,

Skin cases are the worst! I really feel for you and Nola here.

I think its best to go back to the start here and discuss what are the main causes of itching (pruritus) in dogs

    1) parasites - sounds like you have used consistent anti parasite measures so make sure you keep this up to date always. Even if not the primary cause having these little critters on board will amplify the itch

2)Food allergies - was the food used exclusively for 6+ weeks with no treats added. Food trials are extremely difficult to maintain as you literally cannot feed anything but the low allergen food. Even the slightest morsel of beef could set the problem off. Please read this article : http://www.televets.com/articles/dogs/food-allergies-in-dogs.html

    3) Atopic disease / inhaled allergens - By far the most difficult to diagnose and treat. Please see this article for more info : http://www.televets.com/articles/dogs/skin-allergies-in-dogs.html

I would suggest at this stage referral to a veterinary dermatologist is a must

    Hope that helps, David

Every day I see pets come into my clinic injured and unwell. Its always so upsetting knowing that treatment could be taken a lot further only if the owner had taken out pet insurance. You have health insurance, so should your pet... Dr Brooks
