My cat's tummy has been bulged and she occasionaly has diarria. I have given her worm medicine and I haven't noticed anything different. Is it worms? Or could it be something else?

It depends a little on how old she is and what her hunting habits are. If she is a kitten then yes a swollen tummy and diarrhoea can indicate worms, even if you have wormed her recently. It also depends on what you have wormed her with. I recommend three days of panacur as this will cover the majority of worms and giardia which is a common cause of diarrhoea in kittens. If she is older however worms is an unlikely cause as cats tend to get immuninity towards them and they do not cause diarrhoea unless heavily infected. If she is very old then other systemic illnesses can cause this problem especially if she is losing weight aswell such as thyroid problems and tumours. You must decide if she is really putting on weight or if she is just bloated but her ribs and back bone are more prominent, If this is the case then she could have fluid accumulating in her tummy and you must take her to see your vet. Inflammatory bowel disease is also very common in middle aged to elderly cats and can cause intermittent diarrhoea. It is usually due to a dietery intolerance and trying feeding her on a meat and carbohydrate source that she has never had before such as coley and potatoe or turkey and tapiocca may help. If the diarrhoea goes away then reintroduce her normal diet. If it comes back then she is sensitve to something in her normal diet and you should try different diets to find one that suits her. There are now commercially produced hypoallergenic diets which you can get from your vets. If the diarrhoea has been present for more thatn two to three weeks and persisits despite trying the above then you must see your vet as it could be something much more serious. Hope this helps. Zoe

Thank you for your help. I gave her some worm medicine 4 days ago. Should I wait to give her panacur or give it to her now? I wasn't sure if it would be ok to give her more doses of worm medicine after just giving her some 4 days ago.

It is called Worm Rid, Dog Wormer, from the Grange. But it says it can also be used for cats. I gave her 1\4 tsp because she is under a year old. It is in a powder form, but it is outdated, I don't know if that affects how effective it is.
