hi i have a 4 year old tom cat who has fiv he stays indoors.he seems fine in himself but he now has bald patches appearing on his back nearer the front paws but within licking distance! i went to the pdsa regarding an open wound and was given antibiotics, now a week after this fur loss has become noticable, could this be caused by the amox 40mg? and should i use the strong hold while he is on the antibiotics?

Fur loss can be for many reasons. IS he itching too and have you seen any fleas? It is unlikely that it is due to the amoxycillin ( I have seen this after prolonged steroid use but not with antibiotitcs), and yes you usually should still be able to use the stronghold too. Did they say what caused the open wound? Likely causes of fur loss that I usually see are: parasites eg fleas, infection, post stress, psychogenic, trauma, allergies. If it persists or get worse it may be worth taking him back to get rechecked.

I haven't seen any fleas, and I have now applied the stronghold. the wound was caused by an abscess which opened up,I applied saline solution and took him to the vets asap because of the FIV. I adopted him at the beginning of December and he has seemed very settled since. I was just woried it could have been an allergic reaction, the skin where the bald patches are is perfectly fine.

Its unlikely an allergic reaction to the amoxycillin , usually we see more pronounced reaction such as hives, redness and iching and often located around the face. However I suppose anything is possible. If it does persist or get worse I would take him back to your vet. Good luck with him
