My dog's left ear is bright red and has an odor, she keeps scratching and now hanging her head to the left.

It sounds like your pet has an ear infection. It's very common for ears of certain breeds (mostly those with floppy ears like cockers, basset hounds, etc) to become inflammed and painful. It's also not uncommon to see a discharge from the ears (often what appears to be pus) and to have a foul odor that accompanies them. Her holding her head in a different angle also suggests an ear problem.
Your vet will want to do an exam on your baby. Many pets benefit from being sedated, having their ears flushed and medicated. Your vet will send you home with medication for the ears and probably a flush. Recurring ear infections are common, so keep an eye on the ears during and after treatment.
Good luck!
