HELP!!!!!!!!

  • hunter

My puppy has a bad rash that covers most of his face and chest...The area is swollen and red...The bumps are like little white blisters....He is constantly scratching and whimpers if you touch that area....Another puppy out of his litter has the same problem....What is this and is there anything I can put on it that is over the counter?...I don't have the money to take him to the vet right now...

Symptoms: itching & scratching, pain, wounds, lumps and swellings

    Hi

This is probably a parasitic infestation of mites. Puppies are commonly affected by the demodex mite, which lives in the skin and multiplies to form an itchy swollen rash. Multiple litter mates are usually affected. Unfortunately, there is no over the counter medication that kills these mites effectively and safely - you need to purchase an acaricidal wash from your vet (the one we use in the UK is called Aludex).

In the unlikely event that he is suffering from an allergic reaction, you can try giving him a human antihistamine tablet (Benadryl or Piriton) but if it is mites (mange), which it probably is, then this won't help and the longer you leave it, the worse it will get.

    Good luck!
