Last week, we had the tropical storm here in FL. My yard turned into a lake in some areas, and when we let the dogs out to go potty, they dove into the water to play like kids! 3 days later, my pom now coughs and sneezes. It's the end of the month and there's no money for a vet. Can I give him cough syrup or amoxcillian made for people? Will Benadryl help? Furby is 4 yrs old and about 12lbs. Thanks,
Cough and sneezing from getting wet in yard.

Hello
Your dog has probably picked up an infection from the environment somewhere, though this is normally from encountering another diseased dog somewhere and breathing in particles of bacteria/viruses via aerosol transmission.
I would advise against self medicating your dog, as without visiting a vet it is impossible to rule out other potential causes such as a heart problem, though that is unlikely. I often prescribe amoxicillin to coughing dogs, and I would give 50-100 mg twice a day for 7-10 days. I cannot recommend you do that, though the human version you have is probably identical to the one we use in our animal hospital.
Antihistamines like benadryl is unlikely to help as this doesn't sound like an allergic reaction.
Small amounts of cough syrup are generally safe.
