random itching and scratching

  • Murphy

My dog has a recently started to scratches his body with his hind leg whenever we pet him in a certain spot. We found some redness there but aren't sure what it is. Could it be poison ivy or a bug bite?

    Hi

Scratching a dog in a certain spot near his her belly or flank induces the scratch reflex in all dogs. That would be nothing to worry about.

For peace of mind, and to be a responsible dog owner anyway, you should apply an anti-parasitic spot on treatment to your dog monthly. This will prevent him picking up fleas, ticks and mites.
