Cat Cold...?

Rating: 10
Maximus (Max)
Maximus (Max)

We rescued a kitten from a "bad" neighborhood and named him Max. We were unfortunate in that we were only able to save one... He was happy and healthy until a week ago. He started sneezing and developed a runny nose and sticky eyes. We do not have much money to spend on his medical care. Most went to kitten formula. What do you recommend we do for him - he looks so sad! We do the best we can to clean him as a mamma cat would normally - we use warm water on cottonballs to gently clean his nose and eyes... Please, any advise you can give is greatly appreciated.

    Hi there

It does sound like he could have cat flu. This is a disease caused by a virus and can be vaccinated against. Has he been vaccinated? If not I would assume that he has got cat flu, and needs treatment for it. I am afraid there is not much that you can do other than bring him to the vets as cat flu must be treated. Otherwise he is likely to get worse, become lethargic, off food and dehydrated. Young kittens can even die of cat flu.

If he is treated the virus is likely to stay with him for life so you need to be prepared that he might need further treatment at times of immunosuppression (cold/wet weather, stress, etc).

I hope you make the right decision and take him to the vet.
