strange behavior in old dog

Rating: 9

My 11 year old husky/sheperd mixed breed has been acting strangely for the past few days. She seems like she is afraid of something. She follows me around and trys to hide in small spaces. Right now she is laying behind the couch. She just doesn't seem right. Any ideas. I have heard that dogs will go off on their own and hide when they are dying, but she has been very healthy all her life.

Hi, sorry to hear things arent right with Kiki. I agree... pets dont show signs of weakness or seek your comfort continually unless something is not right in my experience. At 11 years old I would want to run some blood work and possibly take some xrays. The blood work would determine if there were any raised liver enzymes or kidney enzymes and would rule out anemia. I mention anemia because splenic tumors are very common in older sheperds and this is why i would also recommend xrays of the abdomen. There may of course be absolutely nothing medically wrong but because you are concerned about her and you have noticed early it may be best to get things checked out before they possibly get worse. Hope that reassures you that you should get her checked by a vet, at least for peace of mind. Best of luck with her...

Every day I see pets come into my clinic injured and unwell. Its always so upsetting knowing that treatment could be taken a lot further only if the owner had taken out pet insurance. You have health insurance, so should your pet... Dr Brooks
