Generally dogs should be on low fat diets after pancreatitis as the fat is generally what induces another flare up. There are many commercial prescription diets out there and chosing which one often depends on if there are any other concurrent problems eg having previously had bladder stones or diabetes Most of my patients go on either Hills prescription diet I/D, G/D, or sometimes W/d or royal canin low fat. A lot depends on how picky they are! Does your dog actually have pancreatitis? and what diet did your vet suggest?

Yes, she was diagnosed by the vet. He placed her on Keflex and when he rechecked her bloodwork it came back in the normal range for her pancreas. The vet sent me home with low fat dog food but she's not interested in it. I've been feeding her boiled chicken and gaines burgers. That's all she seems to want to eat right now and she is down from 60 lbs in 2004 to 40lbs today so I just wanted her to eat to get weight back on her.

Is 40 lb a good weight for her? or is she underweight now? You may want to try adding in some of the different brands of low fat dog food previously suggested if she wont eat the one your vet tried her with as chicken and gains burgers aren't the most nutritionally complete diet.

Yes, she appears underweight but she doesn't seem to have an appetite which could be from the antibiotic she's on, Keflex. I'm going to look into the other lowfat dog foods. We couldn't get her to eat anything but a piece of bread yesterday. So I picked up baby food to try and start getting food in her. She ate a jar of baby food last night and I'm going to try a jar in the am and in the pm to try and stimulate her appetite.

Yes its important she eats and baby food is a good way to start and you may find her appetite picks up once she is done with the keflex ( I know it knocks my appetite down if I take it!). Try warming the foods and try different ones to stimulate her interest. You can also try plain cooked chicken and rice as a start too.

Thank you, I'll try warming the baby food. She's really not interested in chicken. I picked up some 7% fat lean ground beef for her and she ate that right away. I think because it's only 7%, which seems to be lower than some dog foods that should be ok. I also asked my vet and he said because her bloodwork came back ok, i.e. no sign of pancreatitis, the hamburger should be ok. I'm going to try mixing it with the baby food because I don't want her to just be eating hamburger.
