Hair loss is a common condition and sometimes considered as a normal process of shedding. But hair loss can also be a symptom of infections and various deadly diseases. From a simple flea or mosquito bite that causes itching that will lead to hair loss, to seasonal allergies and allergies to food or chemicals, or it could also be ringworms or Sarcopatic mange. Hormonal disease and Cushing disease can also be the cause of hair loss. Age may also be a factor for his hair loss. In your dog's case, the hair loss may be due to tail and back chewing or biting. Tail biting can be either a medical or behavioral problem. Itching is the main reason why a dog bites his tail. As stated above what causes the itch may vary from allergies from flea bites, and food. These are the medical issues than may be the reason for tail biting. Treatment will vary to what causes the itching that causes the tail biting and hair loss. If it is a behavioral issue, it could be due to stress or anxiety, social isolation and other factors. It is therefore important to take your dog to the vet for the right diagnosis, treatment and medication. Take care and good luck.
