If the crusting is on the surface and can be easily wash by water, then it could be seasonal allergies. If your dog loves digging the dirt could make your nose dry and flaky and applying 100% aloe vera would help. But there are other diseases than may cause this like auto immune disorder. It is still best to take your dog to the vet for a physical exam so that the right diagnosis can be establish leading to the proper treatment and medication. Take care and good luck.
