Quick and bizarre death

  • Snickers

My 15 month old miniature piebald dachsund recently died. We let him out before bed with our labrador to go to the bathroom. When I went to let back in, he didn't come. We found him out in back yard heaving. Brought him in and he was having a hard time breathing but kept trying to vomit and had a little diarrhea. My husband stayed up until 3:00am, to make sure he was going to be o'kay and he wagged his tail and seemed to be doing much better. I found him at 6:00 am and he was dead. What could have happened? He never had a big appetite and would do this hacking cough everynow and then. A couple of times, while growing up, I noticed he would heave and seemed to have trouble digesting his food-- breathing would become more labored and hearbeat more rapid. I guess I'm just looking for some closure-- please help!

    Symptoms: breathing, vomiting, coughing, diarrhea

    Hi there

I am so sorry to hear about Snickers. To me it sounds like he has been eaten something that he could not handle, either something poisonous or something causing blockage in the intestines. It does seem more like something poisonous from the way you describe it. A common cause of poisoning in dogs are toads, they excrete a toxin from their skin and could be deadly for a small dog if they try and eat it. Having said that, this is only guesswork from my part. The only way to know for sure would be through an autopsy.

I suppose this is one of those things that happen in life and that are very painful when they do, but I hope you are able to make your peace with it with time.
