question about medications given to my dog for diarrhea

My dog had diarrhea for 3 days with some vomiting at the beginning. He then seemed o.k. but had one more bout of vomiting. I took him to the vet out of concern. The vet said he was giving him a couple of shots to calm his digestive system down. Normally, I would ask what they were but I just assumed they were for the diarrhea. He also gave him some flagyll pills. When I got home, the dog was fine until later on when his heart seemed to be pounding and his eyes looked somewhat fixated. The next day he seemed fine, and we've been feeding him chicken and rice, but he didn't poop for 2 days. Then, today, he had diarrhea again. I called the vet to ask what shots he had given him, and he said it was cortisone and centrine. I was surprised the he had given him cortisone because my dog had only been sick for a few days. The other drug sounds like it also can cause excitability. Are these two drugs dangerous when given together and then with flagyl on top? Also, is it o.k. for me to give him some kaopectate along with all of the other stuff he was given?

I would suggest getting some labwork performed before adding anything else to the mix.  What is the underlying cause of the vomiting and diarrhea?  There are many diseases and problems  that first present with vomiting and diarrhea.  You must have a Vet that went to school a few years back because Centrine isn't a drug that most Vet's use any longer for vomiting or diarrhea cases.  There are just better medications out there to control vomiting and relieve diarrhea.  We routinely use Cerenia which is a drug they use in human medicine for chemo patients, there is also Ondansetron.  These medications do not have the side effects like a Centrine or Reglan would have.  I would also be concerned with how dehydrated the patient is becoming since it has had diarrhea and vomiting for a few days.  Did your Vet give any fluids?

Cortisone and Metronidazole (flagyl) are routinely given for dogs who suffer from inflammatory bowel disease, so giving cortisone is an acceptable treatment.  Cortisone is used to decrease the inflammation in the intestinal tract.  Flagyl also is used for the intestinal tract it has multiple uses: dewormer, anti-inflammatory for the intestinal tract and an antibiotic to treat for gram-negative bacteria.  I hope this information helps.  I wish you the best of luck.
