It is important that you take your dog to the vet before she gives birth for an examination to determine the number of pups, size and shape of the pups. An x-ray is needed so that the vet can access if the pups can pass through the birth canal. If you see the following signs before and during labor take your dog to the vet if your dog's body temperature drops below 100*F and fails to go to labor after 24 hours, continuous strong contractions for over an hour and not producing a pup, interval of more that 4 hours and expecting more puppies to come, and vaginal discharge with bad odor.
