Old cat

My older cat (13) hindlegs look like he is paddling or trying to get away from something causing him a great deal of pain. It doesn't always seem to be the same side that hurts him. He turns his head around and bites himself and pulls out his hair.
He then sits for a few minutes like he is in a trance but seem to respond when I call him or pet him.
I had a blood test done a few weeks ago. They said he is ok except fro FIV. No kidney or liver infection. He did have 3 teeth pulled which was causing bad breath. (it is gone now.) One Dr said he could live several years but was gone when I picked him up. The one there said he might not live a year because of the FIV.

What might be causing the fits?
