Bone Lesion/Osteosarcoma

Rating: 0

My 11 year old golden was given initial Dx of osteosarcoma. HX-Approx. 5 weeks ago "lameness" and "guarding" Lt rear leg at knee. Initial treament was injury to ACL..treated with rimadyl, glucosmine. Approx. 3 weeks began lameness in rt front with swelling above paw at ankle. X-rays revealed lesion (lytic?) with diff. dx indicating. OS. Bone biopsy performed and interpreted as "non-diagnostic". X-ray post biopsy 2 weeks show no marked changes in lesion. Dog has remained on anti-inflams. and antibiotics since biopsy. Blood work is normal. No biochemical bone marker (serum alkine phosphotase) were done however. Dog does have long term Hx of hypothyroidism which has been medically controlled (synthroid) for many years.
Are there any metabolic bone disease in dogs that radiographically would mimic OS type lesions? Or am I am just "hoping for hope" that it is not OS?

Symptoms: Pain, Lameness

I have had a lot of patients just recently that have come into our clinic with similar issues.  Sudden lameness, radiographically it looks like lesions, biopsy usually gives you a definitive diagnosis.  From reading your information it looks like the biopsy was not clear in your case.  My suggestion is to get an opinion from a Veterinary Oncologist, or internal medicine specialist.  These are people that see these cases regularly they know what tests to perform and where to get there biopsies and what it is they are looking at on a radiograph.  I wish you the best of luck.  By the way 2 of our patients; 1 was diagnosed as having lupus, the other has a rarer type of cancer in the bone.  They are not always osteosarcoma. They both are doing pretty well.  Cancer is not a life sentence in every case.  Andrea
