They can but the trick is to find out whether they want to. It is usually better to have two cats of the opposite sex rather than two of the same sex that might compete with each other. But you can never be sure whether your cats are going to like each other or not. I have seen houses filled with cats that all seem to tolerate each other yet have been to visit households with only two cats which hated the sight of each other.

Therefore, it is important that you give them a helping hand. Every time the two cats come together you get out some fun toys for them to play with a few tasty treats of a few small pieces of ham. Get them to associate each other with nice things happening. If one hisses at the other don't get cross and tell it off. Instead get the ham out and feed them.

Also make sure that they do not have to compete over food and toys so have lots about. And more importantly that you have space for each cat to hide and to disappear from the other. It always works better if they have access to outside.

At best most cats seem to tolerate each other and some seem actually seem to like each other and you must make sure both are neutered.

I hope they get on all the best
