We have a 13 yr old Lab whose losing fur mainly at the base of his tail and a little bit around his legs. He is very itchy. He is an outdoor dog who is not bathed regularly but gets flea medication. Do you know what may be causing his fur loss and discomfort? Do you know of any remedies to soothe him?

Hi! I am sorry for the late response to your question. Excessive scratching in dogs can lead to hair loss. There are a lot of factors that causes itching. These are flea allergies, food allergies and atopy. Stress, bacterial infection, or yeast infection can also cause itching. So treatment may vary and it is best that a vet should take a look at your dog. A physical exam is important to have the right diagnosis and treatment. A topical therapy consisting of bathing your dog with either a colloidal oatmeal shampoo or a hypoallergenic shampoo at least once every two weeks will help your dog. Take care and good luck.
