please help me! unwell puppy

Bebinha
Bebinha

Hi Dr. I just bought Bebinha last thursday. She's an angel. Today she hasn't eaten anything or drank any water, she pooped twice kinda diarrhea, and she has this weird cough like if she were choking with hair but there's nothing (it happens like every 20 min). I'm very worried. I tried taking her to an animal hospital but all of them are closed. What should I do... she's not complaining, just laying down (that's all she's done today). Please help me!

Hi, Thanks for the question. I would strongly recommend calling an emergency clinic so that you can have her seen asap. What area do you live in? perhaps I can locate an emergency clinic for you...

If you cannot get to an emergency clinic tonight the only thing you can do is try to syringe feed / bottle feed some water to her. Perhaps add some sugar to the water too to ensure her energy is kept. An alternative would be buying some electrolyte powder from a local chemist and adding that to the water.

The cough may be the result of numerous things but important rule outs would be kennel cough and distemper.

The diarrhea may be stress related but again important rule outs are parvo virus and distemper plus other possibilities.

Please keep her warm. If you have access to a thermometer her rectal temp should be around 101.5 degrees farenheit

If I can help any further just let me know, I will be at my computer all night. Best of luck.

Every day I see pets come into my clinic injured and unwell. Its always so upsetting knowing that treatment could be taken a lot further only if the owner had taken out pet insurance. You have health insurance, so should your pet... Dr Brooks
