vaccines

I keep both of my indoor cats on a 3 yr booster plan for parvo/distemper vaccination. I'm a registered nurse and give people shots everyday at work. I wondered if it would be safe for me to purchase the vaccines from a pet supply company and administer myself. Would I be placing my pets in any harm?? I know that it is rare but sometimes an animal can have an allergic reaction to a vaccine even though they have received it before. Also some articles state that the distemper vaccine can be more damaging than helpful? Do my cats still need a distemper vaccine?

If your vet and yourself have come to the decision that a 3 yr vaccine schedule for your cats is ok then thats completely fine. The risk of contracting Feline Distemper (Panleukopenia) for vaccinated adult cats is lowered considereably but, the possibility is there. The vaccine that is generally given is a combination of a upper respiratory vaccines in one, the thing you should be weary of when using vaccinations from a pet supply company is that you need to make sure the vaccine is not expired- as odd as that sounds its something you need to check. Make sure that the vaccines are stored properly, most vaccines are stored in refrigerators at a certain tempature. You should consult your vet to find out the exact brand and kind of vaccines they use so you can find the same, to limit the possibility of adverse reactions. Its best to have your vet do them becuase you know that the vaccines are safe and administered properly so if they have any adverse reactions they will be dealt with immediately by a veterinarian. I hope i helped and thank you for the question.
