Can cats have panic attacks?

Two days ago my I noticed my cat had a little discharge (white colored) coming out of his left eye. It didn't really look like a big deal until I noticed it was there the second day. Then I got worried. His behavior is normal, although he has been a little more needy lately, but other than that he seems fine. His eye doesn't look infected, but he does shut it slightly every now and then, mainly at night or in the morning. I didn't want to take any chances so I tied to take him to the vet today. But on the way there he started freaking out and panting like a dog. I tried to comfort him by talking to him and petting him, hoping that would kind of calm him down, but his breathing became really fast. He began panting so badly I just turned around back to my house. He is inside now and is acting like nothing happened. His breathing is normal and he seems happy. Did he have a panic attack? Why was he panting? Is there anything I can do to help his eye at home? And what can I do to ease his stress when returning to the vet?

he could hav been stressed already if he has something going on and it was increased when he was in the car sencing, maybe, that yo were going to the vet. yuo can desensitize him by putting him in the car and turn it on then turn it off and then turn it back off and take him back home again lke nothing is wrong. Then later take a small trip around the neighorhood. then take him back home. You're basicaly getting him over his belief that a car ride is a trip to the vet. I'd still take him in to see if there is anything that needs to be addressed regarding his health even if he starts to stress on the way there.I hope I helped, thank you for the question.
