Cat scratched puppy

Rating: 10

My 4 month old chihuahua puppy was scratched on the nose by my cat. It is a decent sized gash near his eye. He doesn't seem to be in pain at all. I did attempt to wipe it off with a wet clean rag and put some antibiotic ointment on it but he just licked it off. Is there anything I can do to keep it from getting infected or to help it heal?

Hi! I am sure both your puppy and cat had anti-rabies vaccination so we can elimanate the worst scenario. Other concern will be the eye. Are you sure the eye was not injured? If not then I suggest cleaning and disinfecting the gash evreyday will help heal it. Clean it with warm water using sterile gauge or cotton balls. Dabbed betadine on the gash also using sterile gauge or cotton balls or a cotton bud will be safer to used. Use caution not to let the betadine get into the eye. Let it dry then apply anti biotic cream. You can put a bandage on the gash so that your dog will not lick the cream.  Take care and good luck.

Thank you so much. That's what I figured but I don't have any betadine. Do you know if there is a cheap off-brand solution? They sell the brand at Walgreens up the street but it's almost $20.

Hi! You don't need to buy betedine if you don't have any. Since it is only a gash, just clean it with warm soapy water and rinse it well. Then apply the antibiotic cream.   Take care.

if i were u i would take her to the vet. I know you think she may not be in pain, but that is not right. take her to the vet and get it fixed or at least looked at. Make sure she gets some attention and train your cat to not do that type of things anymore. Best of luck!!!! from Gills and her friend
