i have a dog named bera i've had him for 4 years now and we just found a kitten whos about 8 wks old and we want to keep her but my dad thinks that by keeping the cat the dog will age quicker is that true? also is there a way we can get the 2 animals to get along?

Hi Jennifer No the dog will definitely not age quicker because of a cat, actually the company might be good for him. Are they not getting along now? Usually when the cat is introduced to the household as a kitten they get along very well, the other way around is more difficult. The general rule is to keep them apart for a while, perhaps keep the kitten in a large cage so the dog gets used to it. I hope this helps Torunn Beurling DrMedVet

I had 3 dogs dogs, ranging in age from 2 years to 12 years and I brought 2 kittens into the house. I kept them apart for about 6 weeks, letting them sniff at each other through a crate, and when I finally introduced them all together, they got along like a great big happy family. I added a third kitten and she fit in just as well. The oldest dog kept everyone in check till he died last November. As I grieved so did the other animamls as they lost a family member as well. They get along great now, sharing the same water bowl, sleeping together, and sometimes chasing each other. So take your time and they will be best friends, eating, sleeping and playiing with each other!

they will not age faster because i have had a dog and a cat that live together

A dog will not age any quicker with a cat as company or just in the home. Leave them alone and they should get used to each other after awhile. But give it time and be patient. Scold them if one harms the other and such. Good Luck, Gabriella
