Guinea Pig Problem

I have 2 guinea pigs and have noticed that one has small black shiney lumps on one of his ears and the other has similar on one of his ears and a circle shaped patch of hair missing off his shoulder that is dry and looks raw around the edges similar to a ringworm on a human. I wormed them today. I brought them 2 and a half months ago. They are approx 6 months old but the one with the missing fur is a bit older. Could they have mites? If not, what might it be? They are not off their food or water at all.

Hi- Is there any way you can post a photo of what these look like? Guinea pigs can get all kinds of different problems with their skin, including ringworm. Unfortuantely, if it is ringworm, worming them will not work because ringworm is actually a fungus. If that is what it is you can use one of the products made for human athlete's foot such as Lamisil or Tolfinate (I hope I'm spelling that right) There are a few different anti-fungal medications available over the counter. Some of them work in a month and some in a week so be sure to read the labels. I have used Lotrimin liquid with good results. I would recommend a liquid over a cream or ointment because it is less messy. There is another product that is worth a shot too. It is called Mane n Tail Pro-tect and it is a shampoo. You would have to shampoo the pigs every week or so for a month but it works for all kinds of skin problems including fungus, bacterial infections and other opportunistic infections. It is made for horses. Just read and follow the label. If you can start with that I would because you don't have to determine what is causing the problem first, since it is good for so many different problems. The other option ifyou have a good vet available near you is to have them do a skin scraping to let you know exactly what the problem is and then target it specifically. If they were mine, I'd likely start with the shampoo and go from there. Make sure that the shampoo you get is Pro-tect because Mane n Tail makes a bunch of differnt ones. Good luck and let me know how it goes or if you have more questions.

Hi Cathy, Thank you for your quick reply. This is a picture of Moes sore. Sorry it isn't very clear but I only have a camera phone. It is about 2 centimetres in diametre and is still very dry. The dark parts around the edge is dried up blood. I also noticed today that him and Fuzzy are sometimes nipping each other. Could it be a bad war wound perhaps? I look forward to hearing back from you soon. Mel

Well it is prety hard to tell from the photo. I can tell you that usually a wound from fighting is either just a small bald patch with a scab from the teeth or if it gets infected it looks like a large pimple or abscess. I can't tell what this looks like. If you can take him to a vet, I'd do that. If the worming didn't help, try the Pro-tect shampoo I suggested. If it is going to work it should start looking better within a week. You should start seeing hair begin to grow back. If not you might try the fungicide, but the shampoo usually works well and can clear up all kinds of skin problems. Good luck with him. I hope this helps.
