My dog bella went out in the yard and had a tussel with a squirrel. The squirrel tore off half of her pad down to tissue on one of her toes on her front left paw. I cleaned with water and peroxcide, put ointment and gauze pad and tape on it, is there more I can do?

Hi! Since you already clean the wound, did you check the paw webbing for any object that might lodge in the paw? Remove it and clean the wound again with warm water or you can soak his paw in a bath warm water with epsom salt for about 10 minutes so that it will soften the skin and flush the debris away.Used paper towels to dry the wound. Disinfect the wound using betadine, you can pour over the wound or dab it using sterile gauge pads or cotton balls. Do not use hydrogen peroxide because it will damage the tissue. If there's a broken nail trim it back. Apply anti-biotic ointment for the next 2 days to prevent infection. You can put bandage over the wound for less irritation and so that your dog will not lick the ointment. Hope this helps you. It is still recomended to seek a vet for other problems that might arise. Good luck.

The advice that Reuben gave you is very good. After doing this you need to monitor the foot every day and if you feel heat in the foot at all you need to see a vet immediately because that is a sign of infection. Watch her carefully so that she doesn't chew the pad as that can lead to further problems. Good luck!

if the vet says it's not urgent enough that is a very STUPID vet hospital. Their supposed to help anything no matter what. Go to a different vet hospital and try REALLY hard to get your dog helped. Good Luck!!!!

I think Reuben's response is right on the money.  I would also say having had to do this just last week.  My dog kept eating the bandage off so I finally went and got some socks at walmart to cover his foot.  Worked like a charm.
