My dog is lethargic and hasn't moved for a couple days

My dog is lethargic. He hasn't moved for days. Hes gone outside to urinate once today. He goes back to the same spot to lay down. I gave him water and ice cubes, he drank and ate them. He ate a hot dog. He got into the trash a few days ago and I gave him a bath a few days ago also. During the bath I brushed him a lot to get out all of the hairs he's been shedding. I think I may have overbrushed around his neck. there are two patches on either side of his neck that are really red under his coat and seem to be weeping because the fur is slightly damp and hard at the end. I put on an antimicrobial cream for dogs that I got over the counter. It seemed to make it less sore. He wimpers when you go to touch the area. He also has the shivers, when I put a heater by him they went away, but they return when the heater is off. We cannot afford to take him to the vet. He is a lab and 3 years old. He is overweight and has lost some weight over the past few days. We just got him a month ago from the previous owner. Please help.

Patients that are overweight have a tendency to develop osteoarthiritis problems.  This could be what is contributing to your pets problems. I would suggest taking your pet to a Vet for a check up.  Most Vets only charge for an exam and then everything else is in addition to it.  So get an exam which in our area runs around $30-65.  Then ask if there is something that you can try at home to make them feel better.  Putting your pet on a good nutritionist diet after he is feeling better.  I usually recommend Iams Wt control which you can purchase at Walmart or the grocery store.  No table scraps should be given while your pet is on a diet.  So gradually getting them off of that if they are on it is recommended.  First though you should get her feeling better and eating on her/his own.  You should take a rectal thermometer and get your dog's temperature.  A dog's normal temperature is 101-102.5. Any lower or higher than the normal your pet should be seen by the Vet as soon as possible.  It could mean that your pet has a serious illness that will require immediate intervention by a Vet.  I hope this has helped and good luck, Andrea
