duke was just laying down and suddenly yelped, jumped up and staying close to me as if afraid now he is just pacing back and forth and panting. what is happening please?

Is he sensitive anywhere? I can't really guage what all is going on with him but, could it be he got bit my a bug or flea or tick? They are uncomfortable and can be very bothersome, not to mention the different diseases/pathogen's they carry- lyme, ehrlichia, heartworm (mosquitos are the carrier), etc. Check him over very well, and if he continues to show abnormal symptoms then you may want to get him into the vet to see if he/she can help pin point the cause.
