we recently adopted a puppy from an animal shelter. we have had her for about 3 1/2 weeks, she was kind of skinny when we got her and even though we feed her regularly, 3 small portions a day is what our vet said to do, she doesn't seem to be gaining any weight. last night when we gave her a bath she shed an unusual amount of hair and today her nose has been running the same way as a persons does. what can i do? please help. she is 5 1/2 months old.

    Hi there,

I Has she been worrmed routinely since you have had her? She should have been wormed at least every month untill 6 months of age. If there is a large number of worms this can cause a failure to thrive.

    Has she been vaccinated?

She should be on a puppy growth formula, feeding three times a day is fine, although at this stage i would be thinking of reducing it to twice a day. I would  certainly also pop her in to your vets for a full health check if she didnt already have one at the shelter.

Is she eating well? and without any problems?  monitor her weight closely and it will give you a good idea of how she is getting on.

Hope that this helps a little
