Well any abnormal growth of any kind is something to be concerned about. The fact that it has grown to a tennis ball could be an indication of a testicular tumor, abscess, or lump. I would not recommend you giving him any sort of human ( Ex: "Children's asprin", Tylenol, etc) or pet pain medication without seeing a veterinarian first.  I know that the ASPCA do have programs to help low income families, that would be the first place I would go to help with the cost especially because you adopted him from the "pound". I would ask why he was not neutered before he was adopted out. A warm compress may help with the discomfort and may help with the swelling. The way to go about doing a warm compress would be by wetting a wash cloth with warm water, NOT HOT WATER, and applying it to the swelling for 5-10 minutes twice daily. Using water that is too warm could cause more discomfort so test the temperature of the water before applying it to your pet. I would highly advise that your pet be seen by his vet soon to resolve the problem. Thank you for your question.
