partial paralysis

My 8 year old German Shepard became sick. I was gone and over the next two days and he became paralyzed. Front legs were really stuff, the back legs could move a little. I took him to a vet and took x-rays with no problems observed. Started him on an IV with antibiotics. I took him home after a couple of days and he is slowly getting better. If you pet or scratch his back along his spine, he will lose muscle function and sit down. At times he drags his left rear leg. At times he can not walk a straight line. After getting him back from the vet’s office, he could run up the driveway at approximately 6 mph. He is up to about 11 mph now and use to run at 16 mph. The vet did not know what was causing the problem, possibly botulism. Could have also been tick paralysis? What else could it have been? It has been 1 ½ months and he is slowly getting better.

Hi, what you describe with Duke isn't typical of tick paralysis but it couldn't be definitively ruled out. Botulism is unusual in dogs, but it does sound like this problem might have been infectious in origin. Most of the other causes of paralysis in a GSD would be progressive, or show up on xray. Most neurological problems are slow to improve, but it is excellent that Duke is getting better. Did your vet give you any instructions for physiotherapy? This might help Duke to get back to his old self more quickly.
