Sick puppy not gaining weight

Rating: 9

My 10 day old pup is not doing well, he is not gaining weight and he has vomitted twice, he is half the size of the second smallest pup.
He is fighting to live, I feed him separately from the others so i know he got a good long feeding. I also hear a bit of rattling in his chest.
is there anything i can do for him?

I dont think that there is much that you can do, with him being so young. Just keep feeding and keeping him warm. Did he not start suckling from the mum? or are these all being hand reared. He may still have fluid on his chest or an infection if he is not breathing well. You could take him along to get checked over, but at this age it is difficult to prescribe anything. I would prepare your self for the worst, but if you feel that he is not feedin adequately or is having problems breathing and is struggling generally i think you should consider whether it is fair to keep him going, and consider having him euthanased. It is so distressing to see them in discomfort. Selena

I agree and thankyou for you reply The litter is all suckling from the mother but him being so tiny he gets pushed aside easily by the others, so I feed him on the mother separately to make sure he has a full belly. I pondered putting him to sleep but when I see him fighting to suckle makes me feel that he wants to live, if he ever did stop eating and lost the will to live I would have him in immidiately for euthanasia. I just didn't know if you could give antibiotics to a pup his size and age. thankyou so much for you time and help, this is a great service you are providing to people

As far as i know you can give antibitotics althought the dose would be minute! one thing i thought of is to feed the puppy with his head raised so that his tummy is lower than his head, he may have inhaled some of the formula. Also feeding this way will help with the vomiting hopefully. Still might be worth taking him for a check up.Please let us know how you get on. Selena
