Checking my dog's temperature

I know ta I am supposedto keep a watch on Spaz's temperature. But I have never used a thermometer rectally (I always checked my children's under their arm). How far do I insert the thermometer?

    Thank you for your question, place the thermometer at least 1-2 inches in and leave it there for 60 seconds or until it beeps (on the digital kind) to get an accurate reading. The newer digital thermometers have a taper to them so you can use that as a guideline. NOTE: You should use a small amount of lubricant (KY, Mineral Oil or Vitamin E oil) on the tip of the thermometer to help ease of administration and Spaz's comfort. I hope this helps.
