mouth drooling?

  • francois

My degu has started to drool while eating. and he is having difficulty getting it in his mouth. I took him to a vet. He said the teeth are fine. not too long. his bottom lip looks a little swollen too. i recently brought home another degu (francois' brother had passed away) so i'm wondering if it's from fighting. how do I get chemicals out of his water so it doesn't get worse. should i worry.

    Symptoms: drooling, wounds

    Hi,

I would not worry about chemical in the water making things worse. Is the lower lip smelly? One reason, probably the most likely would be an infection preventing Francois from eating? Does he have access to wood to help keep his teeth worn down?

    Regards

    Matthew

It's not smelly. and he is eating but it takes him longer to get through a pellet or carrot. This morning I noticed a sore on his lower lip. whether from a cut or an ulser, I don't know. He mood is still good. The drooling (and it's alot) seems to only happen while he's eating. He has little apple wood bits and timothy and alfala hay. Right now he's gnawing on a hard alfala/carrot rabbit treat. which is making him drool and i'm afraid hard foods might irritate the sore thanks joy

    Hi Joy,

ARe you able to feed some of his softer foods (if possible) for a couple of days to limit the soreness? Ho do you think you would get on with liquidising some food and syringe feeding? (I'm not sure whether Francois would be amenable to this!)
