My dog is having puppies...

my dog had puppies today at 2:50pm, 3:30pm, then another pup at 8:00pm. It is 10:50pm now, and I think she still has one more pup (am pretty sure I felt it move just now), but she is not having visible contractions now. Is this normal to take so long for a litter to be born?

Hi there. Firstly congrats on the pups! The situation doesn't sound like something I would be concerned about at the moment. Dogs can take many hours to give birth and it sounds like she is doing well.  Causes for concern are:

    1. Persistant straining with no pups being passed. There is no strict time period for this but I would say straining with no success for 1-2 hrs is concerning.

    2. Passage of greenish/brown fluid

    3. If spaz becomes obviously distressed for prolonged periods of time.

If any of these things occur, she may have what is called a dystocia (problems giving birth) and may need veterinary assistance such as hormones or a caesarian.

Hope it continues to go well and good luck!

Thank you for the help. She had five pups in all. The first was born at 2:50pm (4/2/2008) and the last was born at 2:30am (4/3/2008). Unfortunately, two of the pups were not fully formed (one was stillborn, the othr passed shortly after birth). But we now have three healthy pups, and Spaz is being a wonderful and attentive mommy.
