I heard raw diets help with arthritis. Is this true and are raw diets safe?

I have heard arguments for both sides but I feel I could never recomend using a raw diet for one of my patients. There have been studies to show that there is a higher incidence of problems with things like E coli and Salmonella, so that is enough in my mind never to use it. You have to remember that dogs in the wild eating raw meat are not eating raw meat thats been processed through a meat packing plant.  It is also hard to make the diet balanced, its not just a case of throwing them some raw meat and veggies. It needs to be carefully portioned in the right ratio's with extra vitamin supplements to get a somewhat vaguely balanced diet.

I would rather owners feed a good quality commercial diet and use extra supplements like glucosamine, chondroitin and fish oil for arthritic patients.

    I hope this help you.
