I have a Rag Doll and every night once we go to bed he picks up a toy and walks around with it in his mouth constanly meowing. Just wondering why he does this and if I should be concerned.

Hi, this may be a harmless habit and probably isn't cause for concern. Is it a new and/or sudden behaviour which has just developed, or has he always done this? Sometimes they can be trying to elicit attention or wanting to play. If so, make sure his needs for playtime and expression of hunting behaviour are being met. Is he an indoor cat or can he go out? If there's any question of physical illness get him examined by a vet, as sometimes a change in behaviour can be a symptom of physical illness.

Hi Helen, thank you for getting back to me. This is not a sudden change in behavior he has pretty much done it every since we got him. He only does it once we go to bed, not when we are up. So maybe it is his attempt to elicit attention. He is strictly an indoor cat and exhibits no sighs of illness. Could it be a behaviour trait of the Rag Doll breed?

Although they are large they are generally easy-going cats and they do seem to form strong attachments to their owners, so it's probably normal for him and something more likely to be seen in this breed than others. If it doesn't cause a problem it should be fine to let him do this as long as he is getting his needs met at other times. He sounds like a great pet!

My male cat (8) does the same thing at night. I just figured he was lonely and the quiet upset him and he needed to hear himself.

My female Scottish Fold drags ribbons and pieces of paper around and meows loudly at all hours. No idea why she does this. Otherwise she is affectionate and in good health.

My 8 year old cat does this with one of my son's small stuffed pig. We call her upstairs when she does it so she knows we are there. I usually have to go down stairs and get her and hide the pig. She will only do it with that particular stuffy. It is kind of ironic because the stuffy is black and white just like her. I think she thinks it is her baby although she has never had a litter of her own.

Cat's are nocturnal and if you don't play with your cat enough (since he is declawed) he will have more energy. you should give him an obstical course of some sort so he can play when you sleep. Something simple will do, like a toy mouse tied to a string hung somewhere just within his maximum reach. Also a moving toy mouse will give him the idea of hunting.
