Blood in Stool

Rating: 8

Maggie has been having diarrhea for a few days. She is still drinking, wanting to eat and go for her walks. She is still active. However, today, Dec 16, 2007, when she had her 2 bowel movement of the day, there was blood in it. Should I be concerned, this has not happened before.

Symptoms: Diarrhea

If the blood is fresh and small in quantity it may be mild inflammation of the large intestine, which often resolves itself without treatment. The best guide is how she is in herself- which sounds fine. As she has not had a history of this problem before it's worth a wait-and-see approach, but if it goes on for more than a few days, or the blood is in large amounts, or there is profuse vomiting or she is depressed then she should be checked by a vet.
