Rating: 8
Petey Pie
Petey Pie

When I got Petey he had a very bad split in his top beak and the meat was showing and it is still this way what can I do? I have some Harrison's bird feed ground up and he is eating this, is there anything I can put on the beak like a filler to fix it till it grows out?

Hi, Sorry to hear about your bird. Is he eating as normal and does he seem comfortable with it? Obviously you will need to check it daily to make sure that no infection is building up or that food is getting stuck. The only problem i would be worried about is that the beak may start to grow deformed, and will then need constant trimming. Personally i would see about taking him to a avian (bird) specialist, he will be able to give you a better prognosis. i know that these can be fixed sometimes with a special filler untill the beak grows. it just depends on how bad and where about the crack is. if you can - bath the area with some salt water solution this will help keep any infection at bay hopefully, but it could be very painful too. I hope this is of some help. Good Luck. Selena

That was the best news I have heard frome anyone about the problem. The lady that bred and sold these birds was going to put Petey down because she couldn't sell him but she was a friend and I wanted him because I just can't see putting an animal down if you can work a little more and save him. She was just in a hurry to move out of the state because she was getting married. I really apprieciate your help in this matter, but I need to ask another question do you know of a good avian vet in this area? If you do please e-mail me with one I am not sure who has the best credentials for that. Thanks for all the help. Gratefully Yours, Cheryl Monroe

Where are you based? I Hope that something can be done, Obviously it is difficult to gauge things via the internet. But at least you have given him a chance that is the main thing.
