My dog had a toe amputated approx 9 weeks ago,
it was a tumour which was malignant,on the top of the same leg he has a small, what feels like a pea size cyst, you can get hold of it and move it around, do dogs have glands on the outside of the leg and could this be cancer returning,I wa told that the tumour was got out in its entirity.

What type of tumor did he have on his toe? There really shouldn't be any types of glands on his leg that this could be. I always tell owners that a lump is just a lump until it is proven as anything else. ie you need to take a sample to see what it really is and then you can decide is it something that needs to be taken off or just left alone and monitored. The easiest type of sample to take is a fine needle aspirate ( the patient is awake and it hurts no more than a regular shot). Its pretty unlikely that this is the tumor returning however knowing that he had a malignant tumor removed recently I would err on the side of caution and get a sample taken. The good thing you are saying with this lump is that it appears to be small and it is not well attached to underlying tissues and it doesn't really seem to bother him if you are able to touch it and move it easily. I hope this helps. Dr Spar

Thank you for your reply, I may have mislead you as to the correct location of the sweeling. It is at the top of the front leg where it joins the chest area.Hope this helps you more. As I say he seems very lively and we were worried if it had spread something from having the toe removed,I do not know what type of tumour it was only that it had a few malignant cells.

there is a lymph node deep in the armpit area at the top of the leg, but it is unlikely to be that if it is pea sized and freely mobile. The chances of spread from toes tumours are pretty low if it has been fully removed. They usually tend to recur at the same site more than anything. Even though it is probably nothing to worry about I would still probably get it checked out.
