Puppy with a limp

Rating: 8

My pup was playing with my cat downstairs and came back up with a limp, I'm not sure what happened but he can't put any pressure on his front left leg. It's not broken.. I tried to massage it to see where the pain was and it was a little sensitive on the elbow and top joint.. The vets have already given me an estimate of about 250$ for x-rays and such.. Should I wait it out and see if it gets better? I'm tight with money at the moment.. I was also considering better k9 aspirin for him... Any thoughts?

    Dear Danielle,

If on feeling the leg there doesn't appear to be any obvious fracture, then time and rest is a perfectly reasonable option. If within a few days things are no better then I would suggest seeing the vet. A resonable course of action would be painkillers for a few days and then x rays if no better, so you don't have to go for the big $$$ first off.

If Harley is in pain then I would suggest seeing the vet for painkillers straight away and discuss with them that you would like to try pain relief first - I am sure they will be happy with this, unless they can feel a suspicious area on examination.

I would avoid giving any aspirin/tylenol to such a young dog as there is potential for organ damage with non-veterinary painkillers.

    Regards

    Matthew
