Dear Sir/Madam, I have two dogs, one is a puppy I just got from a rescue home. At the time we did not realise the puppy had sarcoptic mange; the puppy has been getting the dips for his mange for the past six weeks. Glen (my older dog who is 14) has now got the Sarcoptic Mange, despite boiling all bedding, giving Glen weekly washed in sulphur or Neem shampoos and putting Lyclear onitment on him and giving him arensic alb. liquid (which was recommended as a homeopathic remedy). Glen gets is very uneasy about travelling and doesn't like to be away from us for any length of time. We genuinely thought that if Glen was to get the same treatment that the puppy got that he would die. I asked for a recommendation for some home treatment for Glen, but in the UK we don't have 'Revolution' and I'm not sure what would be safe because he is an elderly collie and I've heard that 'Ivermectin' treatments sould not be used for collies. Glen is getting worse - his hair is coming out more than ever now. It looks like Glen will have to go to a vet, but we are really worried that the vet might decide to put him down there and then - we really don't want to lose Glen. Please can you advise? Do dogs with severe Sarcoptic Mange have to get put down - is there anything else that can be done?

Hello...
would have to refer you to ask one of the Vets on our advisor site, this is something I unfortunately couldn't help you with. sice you live in UK and you also can't use ivermicten, because he's a collie.
Sorry....Regards,Barry

Hi there,
I certainly doubt that a vet would want to put a dog to sleep just because the dog has mange, it will be a long road to recovery but i have NEVER known a dog be put down because of it.
I would recommend using Stronghold spot on consecutively for two months, this should clear up the infection. And i would see your vet about getting something to stop her itching and scratching.
Socks on her hind legs can prevent further trauma.
There are two types of Mange - Demodetic mange and Sarcoptic mange both cause by parasites - usually the vet will do skin scrapes to sort which mange it is.
I hope you mange to get her sorted soon.
