My bluetick coonhound has had 2 bouts of bloat in the last 5 years. Is there anything I can do to prevent this from happening again?

Hi there. There are a few ways to try to prevent 'bloat' or gastric dilation. Feed small amounts 2-3 times a day rather than 1 big meal, feed using a bowl with a large object in it so your dog eats slower due to having to eat around the object (eg. a ring cake tin), do not feed straight after excercise and do not excercise straight after feeding. A surgery to attach the stomach to the side of the abdomen can be done to prevent twisting of the stomach, which is the main danger with gastric dilation, however the dilation can still occur. It is important to take the dog to the vet asap if you notice bloating as this can progress to a volvulus (twisting) which is a life-threatening situation. I hope this helps and please let me know if you have any other questions.
