cat sexual behavior

Rating: 7

my neutered male cat Dusty likes masturbating. He has been neutered since he was a kitten. He climbs on my lap or bed or blanket and starts to move as if he was having intercourse it seems to work for him... i dont wish to mean to him but it causes a really bad smell. he has been doing this all along since he was a kitten but now he seems to be doing it more often. He does not display any other signs like spraying or chasing female cats although there are female cats around. I would really hate to have operated on again. He is a really nice cat besides this problem.

I am afraid this sounds more like a behavioural problem than a medical/surgical one and with behavioural problems unfortunately there is no quick overnight fix but I would hope we can help out a little. If there is a bad smell (typically a fishy odor) it may well be that he is expressing his anal sacs at the same time. Is he an indoor cat? and any other cats in the house with him? Does anything bring on the behaviour? is he stressed? Behavioural problems like this can be quite addictive and the more he does it the more he will want to carry on doing it. You may want to try using a product called feliway which is a pheromone spray or plug in diffuser which can help with certain behavioural problems. Also when he does this behaviour try and distract him with something else either a toy to chase or if that fails using a can filled with pennies that you can shake when he does this ( you have to time it while he is doing it though, not once he is finished).
